Something that I'd love to have a better understanding of is pancake lenses that have become ubiquitous in the last couple years (and especially so with the introduction of the Quest3). My understanding is that these have a large impact on reducing fringing while providing a wider FoV as well. Apparently this trade-off is worth the considerable expense of pancake lenses, but I haven't seen a good breakdown of this.
