If a person was in a room like this, it would be very difficult to determine what lights were exactly lighting up what parts of the room, but to render this image, we'd have to do exactly that!

From a comment on the previous slide, it seems like these lamps were designed to minimize glare and provide uniform lighting. It really looks like they work to me; the lighting in the picture is super soft and diffuse.
