I think this slide does a really good job explaining direct illumination vs indirect illumination since I had a really hard time visualizing what it would look like in the earlier slides. However, from this it's clear from this diagram that direct illumination involves light which 'directly' hits a surface and then bounces to our view point. Indirect illumination is everything else that bounces elsewhere before bouncing to point p.
