I wonder if it would be possible to measure and represent brdfs in the same way we might with textures. For example, instead of using a lot of space to store a sample-dense measurement of the brdf of a whole surface, we could take a high density sample of a small area of the surface and edit it so that the brdf can be "tileable" in the same way a modified texture can be tiled over a large area without being able to tell where the borders of each texture tile are.
