what effect does tilting the focal plane have on the resulting image?

yzyz

The plane of focus will be tilted. Normally, only things at a certain distance from the camera will be in focus. With a tilted plane of focus, it is possible for things at different distances from the camera to all be in focus, as long as they lie on the plane of focus. You can see an example of this effect in this image: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheimpflug_principle#/media/File:Tilt-lens_photo_of_model_train.jpg
