CMOS sensors are also know as active pixel sensors. The image sensor itself is produced using CMOS technology (a type of circuit design popular in integrated circuits, more related to EE I believe). CMOS tech is supposed to be very low powered and robust to noise. They've become a pretty popular alternative compared to charge coupled devices (CCD), which require a lot more power because it moves electrical charge to generate the same results.
