Lecture 17: Intro to Animation, Kinematics, Motion Capture (49)

the last weakness, that the captured animation might not be easily translated to the artistic vision reminded me of this video https://youtu.be/w_Z7YUyCEGE depicting how they portrayed Gollum using a very expressive human actor and mapping this onto a computer mapping

Also extending from the last weakness, even though motion capture is a great way of getting actual data from body movements from actors, it seems that they are not applicable to animated characters that have very different appearances from the human body. I wonder if machine learning would be able to extract the "style" or "personality" of a motion capture dataset and apply it to non-humanoid animated characters?

Here's a video of Benedict Cumberbatch doing motion capture for a dragon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu9XPEdBelY I think although recent technology has allowed some non-humanoid characters to be motion captured, the actor / actress has to be very good at acting to really deliver the emotions.
