One more advanced related physics application of connections between particles is lattice QCD, which models the strong force by discretizing space and time and only allowing interactions between adjacent points in space, forming a similar structure to the grids of particles we have discussed. But these points are much more abstract, with each point storing fields representing quarks and each link between them storing fields representing gluons. This is an active area of theoretical physics research. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lattice_QCD
