Is there any deeper contexts where this notation is helpful? Like is there any reason we would want to simultaneously analyze multiple signals or detectors and turn this into matrix multiplication accordingly?

I think it is helpful since we want to represent these coefficients as data, say in a physically-based renderer. Also, I think we can make the representations efficient by choosing good bases for s and r.
