If the span of of the eye's spectral response functions was in a higher dimension than the span of the monitor's primary (which it should be?) then wouldn't this not work? Since the projection from infinite dimension space to some lower dimension space of the eye, would still be a projection onto a higher dimension than that of the monitor's span.

This projection isn't necessarily a 1-1 mapping because of metamers right?
