Lecture 20: Introduction to Color Science (Cont) (6)

Why are these the wavelengths chosen to represent each color? Is it just convention?

To aparikh98: The wavelengths are based on the CIE RGB standard which were chosen because primaries with wavelengths 546.1 nm and 435.8 nm were reproducible monochromatic lines of a mercury vapor discharge. The red 700 nm wavelength was chosen because the eye's perception of color changes very little at this wavelength so small errors would not affect the results. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIE_1931_color_space#CIE_RGB_color_space
