In general, are there more noise from pixels or are there more noise from sensor shot noise ?

@hilary217, with regards to pixel noise, in terms of dark current and hot pixels, these will be harder to remove as the noise can't easily be "subtracted" or "removed" from the total count. We can only hope to reduce these by doing things like chilling the sensor. We can compare these to the aliasing of colors where we have concrete methods to anti-aliasing with color filters and tweaking the characteristics of the sensor. However, with newer machinery, I would think that these kinds of pixel noise would be negligible.
