I think an interesting application of machine learning would be to improve the lighting within an image in post processing. This would work similarly to recoloring black and white photographs, but instead with light. I think this could have huge artistic impact, because I find that the lighting is really what makes a picture stand out. Imagine being able to use an ML model to "relight" a photo taken in the afternoon to one taken at sunset.
