Does anybody know why these specific letters are used for the Snellen chart? Is it just precedence, or is there an optical reason?

From wikipedia, there are mainly two reasons:
They have a particular, simple geometry in which:
the thickness of the lines equals the thickness of the white spaces between lines and the thickness of the gap in the letter "C"
the height and width of the optotype (letter) is five times the thickness of the line.

I'm curious if it's possible to wear glasses with VR headsets since most people don't have 20/20 vision. Would this affect how the headset focuses/computes what images to show?
