I'm still confused as to how a light field would help in this scenario. Wouldn't the headset screen still be just as close to the eyes, causing the eyes to converge?

The difference will be that the light field is able to emit rays of light that appear to originate from behind the display, which can 'trick' your eyes into focusing to the right distance away.
