Even though the study of photography and cameras is relatively new (around 200 years old), the study of optics is very old field. In fact, an Arab scholar named Ibn Al-Haytham (945-1040), invented the camera obscura. This was a precursor to the pinhole camera and demonstrates how light can project an image onto a flat surface.
