If anyone would like to see real examples of cool effects that you can achieve with displacement mapping, I found an interesting blog post. It uses an OpenGL 4 feature for tessellating geometries. It looks like back in 2010, it was a very expensive feature to try and make use of this way; I'd be interested to know how much faster it's gotten since then.
