I'm confused on how the goniometric diagram can be used to model 3D lighting since it is only in 2D and loses a lot of the detail of the artichoke lamp since some of the light is blocked by the panels below. Could someone explain how this diagram works to model 3D space?

I believe, for this lamp in specific, due to its radial symmetry, we can take this diagram and basically spin it around the vertical center line. That way we can get a sense for the intensity at all 3D positions as well.
