Are there any criteria or heuristics for determining how many bounces we should use in our rendering equation to produce the most realistic picture? It seems like there are only subtle differences between 4 to 16 bounces, so which picture would be deemed the most realistic?

@christineelu My intuition would be that the higher number of bounces is always the more realistic picture, as real life would have infinite bounces. It is up to the developer to decide how realistic is realistic enough to devote the resources towards, as obviously more bounces means more compute time.
