Lecture 16: Intro to Animation (30)

When we apply the Hermite spline, we generate a smooth in and smooth out curve with zero derivatives at the beginning and end points. It is very useful to smoothly start and end the animation.

Another important tech for animation is the transition between two scenes when we switch the videos. The easiest way is just to jump between two videos, but a better way is to fade into dark and gradually move to the next video. It can make the transition smoother.

Ease-in and ease-out can better simulate the acceleration, velocity, and movement of an object because in reality the movement is C0, C1, and C2 continuous. Otherwise, it will be “Abrupt”, just like shown in the slides. Considering a car starts and then brakes, it must slowly increase its speed then slowly decreases its velocity till it totally stops.

I think it's really interesting how lots of websites use ease-ins and ease-outs for their animations and transitions

Ease-in and ease-out as a principle also reflects the physics of working under a constant acceleration. Animation demonstration
