I forget when this was touched on in the lecture, but although I've always known that gray was a color that requires context to exist, I've never thought of brown as having the same property! I guess it's because it's basically just a shade of a "pure" color, so it doesn't really make sense in isolation. That's really relevant here where the center tile in the shadow doesn't look brown due to the context.
