I am little confused as to why the frequency domain shows most variation going from the top left to the bottom right... looking at the spatial domain the variation seems to be concentrated going from bottom left to top right.

Imagine walking from bottom left to top right in the spatial domain, the change from black to white to black is slow compared to when walking from top left to bottom right. Therefore, the variation from bottom left to top right is actually "less" since it varies slower.
