It's easy to forget the psychological component of graphic design--when I think of rendering video game or movie components, I think of the overarching goals as "being realistic" or "being aesthetic", but there's lots of consideration behind "why are we striving for realism?" "what kind of feeling do we want to inspire in the user with this aesthetic" that is often overlooked.

@reinaw1012 Yes, much of graphics strived for visual "realism", or "photorealism". But many other branches of graphics embraced other directions, including non-photorealistic rendering (NPR) such as toon shading; or data visualization.
