If we used random sampling of area light, I wonder if the walls would all be dark (unnatural) (such as the ceiling in the previous slides with the mirror spheres), while all the furniture would be dimly illuminated. Would look kind of eerie if this were the case.

Well, if you do direct lighting, any kind of sampling will result in most things being dark. Even the best 1-bounce sampling method is inferior to the multiple-bounce path tracing.
