Just in case anyone's curious, here's the whole "illusion of life" (mentioned in this slide) video that describes each of the 12 basic principles of animation. (https://vimeo.com/93206523). I thought it was very cool how even with simple shapes, applying these principles already makes it look more life like. Very cute!

Given that joints on living creatures are axis of rotation, it very well goes together that we generally move about in curvy fashions. To move linearly would actually take quite a bit of coordination effort, thus being unnatural.
