To add something else to the comment above, it would be really cool to combine this sort of interactive tool with stuff like 3D models and simulation; for example, you design 3D clothes which can then be placed onto 3D models and simulated with different kinds of material to see what works best. Probably extremely complicated, but intriguing nonetheless!

VR painting definitely appears to be something that's an in-between for painting and sculpting; as noted in previous comments above, it seems to be very versatile, and incredibly useful for designing 3D objects efficiently, given the volumetric painting capabilities.
