do we use the linear operator property for the later derivation? I didn't see it show up and was just wondering if i missed something

I was wondering if there's any examples on non-linear operators? Or would there ever be a case when we need non-linear operators in this case? Could its be because we are illustrating light rays as a straight line, we only care about linear operators?
