If the medium is evenly distributed, then instead of ray tracing through the medium and simulating particle collisions, we could make probabilistic estimates of the effect of traveling through the medium (e.g. the medium has a certain density and volume, so the emitted/absorbed light will approximately be of this value in this direction).
