What does it mean to average the samples? Do samples have some value associated with them?

The samples are f(x,y), which is the inside triangle function. For example, if the dot is inside the triangle, then f(x,y) = 1 and 0 if not. You would average these samples inside the pixel to get a proportion to use for the color.
