We talked about two different types of lighting methods so far, direct and environment map. The slide with the two balls illustrate the difference.

In this picture, the sharp reflection on this mug gives a glossy feeling which is probably achieved by a direct sampling of an environment map

However the highlighting (white spots at the bottom of the mug) look like a result of direct lighting

Nevertheless, I think it is impressive that even in 2009 such hyperrealistic computer graphics models existed even then. I don't remember my games looking this good...
